Guillaume told me last night about three experiments with puppies. In one, the puppies are met always by the scientists with affection. The second, the opposite; they are rewarded none. The third group receive sometimes affection, sometimes have affection disappointed, inconsistent. He tells me it is in the third instance that the puppies become most attached, and I conceive of attachment then as cruel, burdensome, lying founded on a traumatic relation.
